Downton on the Island

The Robins slipped to a disappointing defeat on the Isle of Wight as East Cowes Victoria claimed their first league points of the season.
Jody Rivers team started well with Lee Vint having a clear opportunity. The former Verwood Town and Bransgore striker firing just wide as Vics keeper Karl Steinborn Busse’s advanced.
Downton took the lead when James Clark whipped in a corner and Sam Howe got up to head the Robins into the lead.
It had been a positive opening half hour for Downton after a testing opening game with Alton last weekend.

The lead didn’t last long as Liam Newbold levelled in the 37th minute. Newbold went wide of the Robins defence firing home past an advancing Ernie Osei in off Paul Gulliver.

Vics confidence lifted and they took the lead in the 41st minute. Osei tidily swept up a long ball into the box clearing the second ball straight to Harrison Catania who chipped it straight back into the net from 20 yards.
Things got worse after the break when Ben Starr was sent off after a tussle with Catania that was seen by the assistant referee. Catania receiving a yellow. Starr a straight red.
With the former Calne Town man off the field it looked a tall order for the Robins as they pressed seeking an opportunity to find a way back into the game.
James Clark was playing well and despite the numerical disadvantage created openings to try and unlock the door which the Islanders had closed.
Lee Vint tested Steinborn Busse and also had a penalty claim waved away after going down in the box with East Cowes now closing ranks.
It was little too late with Vics skipper Ryan Gregory marshalling his troops to hold out and enjoy celebrating a win that leaves the Robins at the foot of the table after two games.
