Players to keep an eye on

Danny Ings

The Saints’ top goal scorer, which resulted the most successful signing for the club in years and also in the Premier League this season, has made an incredible performance so far this season, scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances (in the Premier League). He turned out to “save the Saints” during a difficult time earlier in the year.

Moussa Djenepo

The Saints’ new talisman has made a total of 18 appearances (in the Premier League) for his new club, scoring 2 amazing goals too. He has helped a lot, with his cheeky plays and dribbles, and it would not have been possible to rescue the club from relegation without his help. He has impressed the manager, the team and the fans.

Nathan Redmond

The English attacking-midfielder has made 23 appearances so far this season in the Premier League and has also scored 3 goals. He has played a very good season, and if it weren’t for the injury he had, he could have had an even better one. Especially important part of the team, creating chances and goals.

Sofiane Boufal

The Southampton winger has made 19 appearances in the Premier League so far this season and has also created 2 goals. He is a fundamental part of the team, and matches could have been even more difficult without him.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

The team captain (who has played almost all of the matches for Saints so far this season in the Premier League) resulted an essential part to the team, going through every difficult moment, but always managing to cheer and encourage every player.

James Ward-Prowse

The 25-year old free kick wonder is improving more and more every season. So far this season, in the Premier League, he’s scored 4 goals and made 3 assists in 29 appearances. He has scored 1 goal from a free kick and 1 from a penalty (stats from this season in the Premier League). The Saints midfielder has proved once again his best this season, and even though he had a horrible injury, he managed to help his club spur to victory a lot of the times.

Stuart Armstrong

The Scottish man has made an unexpected and surprisingly wonderful season. He’s made 21 appearances and created 4 goals (3 of them scored by him) for the Saints (in the Premier League) so far this season. He was not given a chance to impress in previous seasons, but this season Ralph finally gave him what he deserved, and he’s impressed everyone.

Jack Stephens

The Saints centre-back has had an astonishing season, with his 21 matches played in the Premier League, including 1 goal and 3 assists. He has blocked loads of shots, intercepting passes and winning duels. Without him the club would be in serious trouble.

Alex McCarthy

Alex McCarthy, since he got back in the starting IX as first choice goalkeeper, he’s done nothing but made a good impression. It can be said that he is a very talented goalkeeper given his 19 appearances and 58 saves made in the Premier League for the Saints.

Players with good potential, but still must improve and impress

Jan Bednarek

The Polish centre-back has made a total of 27 appearances so far this season, including 1 goal. He sometimes makes a few mistakes, but most of the times he manages to cope well with the defensive situation. I do not think you can always rely on him as first team choice, so that’s why the club should buy a new centre-back.

Yan Valery

The young Frenchman has been out injured for most of the season and made only 9 appearances. He is a particularly good player but makes a couple of mistakes (he is young and not fully experienced). Ralph should give him the chance to play, but you can’t always rely on him.

Angus Gunn

The goalkeeper still must learn and experience some things, and that’s why it might be too soon for him to be first team choice. He has made some excellent saves but also some simple mistakes in his 10 appearances for the club this season (in the Premier League).

Che Adams

The striker was given lots of chances to prove his best, but he got very unlucky at times. He has made 22 appearances for Southampton (in the Premier League so far), but never managed to score. He has to work hard in training and in cup games, to try and get his confidence back, to get back scoring again (like he did in the Championship in the previous seasons).

Michael Obafemi

The young Irishman has made 15 appearances for Saints so far, this Premier League season, and scored 2 amazing goals. He is incredibly talented, but there’s still room for improvement at his very young age. He can turn out to be like Ward-Prowse and get to play as first team striker in two seasons’ time.

Haven’t seen so much of these players this season

Kyle Walker-Peters

The Tottenham loanee has made only one appearance for Southampton in the Premier League, and I’m sure every Saints fan would like to see him play some more in the remaining games of the season.

Ryan Bertrand

The English full-back has been at Southampton for six seasons now, and has impressed a lot over the years, but I honestly have to say, even though he scored 1 goal in his 24 Premier League appearances so far this season, he hasn’t been as involved as in the past seasons with the team. It’s like this season he’s missing and creating less goals for the team compared to previous seasons.

Shane Long

The Irish striker has been at Southampton for a long time now, but he hasn’t impressed too much lately, given how much he impressed everyone in the past seasons. He has made 19 appearances in the Premier League so far this season and only scored 2 goals.

Jannik Vestergaard

The tallest player in the team now, has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this season. He has made lots of mistakes and maybe that’s why he’s been missing in the starting XI lots of the times.

Oriol Romeu

The Spanish defensive midfielder has not done much this season. He has played 22 matches in the Premier League this season but was not involved in any of the goals. He has been a little absent this season, compared to other previous ones.

Kevin Danso

The Austrian loanee from Ausburg has only played 6 Premier League matches this season (not what the fans where expecting). He has also received 1 red card in such a short time. I guess the signing turned out not to be a successful one.
