It’s finally here, Saints kick off their Premier League season at St Mary’s against Sean Dyche’s Burnley.
Mark Hughes’ men will be looking to try and make a positive start to this years campaign by building on the foundations that were set during the club’s successful survival bid and the end of last season.
Pre season has thrown up a mixed bag for Saints, who have have done well in the transfer window this summerin a bid to push up the table and avoid a repeat of last year’s nail-biting finish.
Midfielder Stuart Armstrong, who arrived from Scottish champions Celtic for a fee of £7 million, has been the pick of the bunch among the team’s fresh faces.
Of the other new signings—Jannik Vestergaard, Angus Gunn,Mohamed Elyounoussi and deadline-day arrival Danny Ings—only the Dane will be joining Armstrong in the starting 11 if the pre-season fixtures are anything to go on.
Seemingly it feels like Southampton are meeting Burnley at a good time, with the Lancashire outfit travelling to the South Coast just days after a Europa League fixture in Istanbul, meaning they could be a bit leggy come the closing moments of the game.
Sean Dyche’s side have also had a mixed bag this pre season, and struggled in their opening European qualifier against Scottish side Aberdeen, only progressing after extra time at Turf Moor.
I am hoping Saints will come out of the traps quickly on Sunday, with signs of entertaining, fast, attacking football their for all to see.
With everything seemingly in Saints’ favour on Sunday, with our track record it’s got a 0-1 away win written all over it.
However, I’m going to be positive heading into the new campaign and predict a 2-1 win and an early three points on the board.
